School superintendent details budget cuts

Superintendent Leonard Rezmierski told the the school board and parents in attendance Tuesday night at the Board of Education meeting at more about the district's budget situation.

The district stands to lose about $791 per student in the coming school year, he said. This fugure is a combination of factors, including the $470 per-pupil cut in Gov. Rick Snyder's proposed budget.

"We can't take this hit all at once," Rezmierski said. "I agree with the governor's premise that we all have to make serious shared sacrifices. ... (Schools) are carrying the load greater than anyone else is. Is this a shared sacrifice?"

Rezmierski went on to explain that school aid is taking one of the biggest hits under the governor's proposed budget, amounting to a 7.3 percent loss.

He urged parents to take up the issue with state legislators at their coffee meetings around town.

Rezmierski said the district will hold two information sessions for the community on the school budget before the May 3 election on the sinking fund, which would help pay for the district's capital improvements:

Eagle Scout honored

Northville High School student and Eagle Scout Jonathan Montgomery was honored by the district Tuesday night for his service.

As part of his Eagle Scout project, Montgomery helped restore the bridge at Mill Race Village and clear the area of invasive species.

It was part of an effort "to make the city look cleaner," he said.

Rezmierski praised Montgomery and the Eagle Scout program. "We're very proud of what you've done," he told the student.
