Northville Patch's Whiz Kid: Stephen Champagne

This high school senior is an accomplished athlete and student.

On the verge of graduation, senior Stephen Champagne has several accomplishments under his belt.

He is a member of the National Honor Society and plays for the high school’s hockey team. But he says his biggest accomplishment was winning the Hobey Baker High School Character Award.

The award is given to high school students around the country on the basis of, according to its website, “character, commitment, teamwork, persistence, selflessness, academic excellence and sportsmanship” and putting “The Team before me.”

Champagne is the first to receive it for Northville, he said. His reaction to winning the award was “bewilderment that hard work during the season paid off,” he said.

In the fall, Champagne will head to college, where he said he will try to pursue the sport he loves on a club level.
