Northville School Board Briefs: Closure of Old Village School Officially Approved

Old Village to close

The Northville school board formally voted Tuesday night at its regular meeting on the long-discussed closure of . The board unanimously voted that the special education school will be closed beginning Aug. 20.

Superintendent Mary Kay Gallagher explained that the closure reflects an attempt to consolidate the school with another special education school in the district, on Eight Mile and Center streets. Six classrooms are in operation at Old Village, serving about 50 students, though that number might change following the move, she said.

Enrollment numbers likely higher than projected

may see a bump in enrollment this year, higher than the flat enrollment estimated when the .

Gallagher estimates enrollment could increase by as much as 50 to 100 students.

This is important because it impacts the total amount of per pupil dollars the district gets to apply toward its budget. The district will know the concrete numbers within the first few weeks of the start of school on Sept. 4, she said.

School board election update

Gallagher updated the board about the school elections, telling them that . The three elected will serve four-year terms on the board beginning in January 2013.

She also thanked President Dottie Garrity, who will not be seeking re-election.

"We appreciate your four years of service," she said, adding that she respects Garrity's decission not to run again.

Videographer retires

Northville Public Schools' videographer of 13 years is retiring and was recognized for his service Tuesday night.

Brad Leidal told the board he will be leaving to run for a school board seat at Novi's school district.
