Northville Elementary School Evacuated Due to Burning Smell

The fire department was at the school Tuesday morning.

Students at Northville's Silver Springs Elementary School were evacuated from the building at about 10:40 a.m. Tuesday after staff reported a burning smell.

The fire department arrived at the school, 19801 Silver Spring Dr., to assess the situation, Superintendent Mary Kay Gallagher said in an email to parents.

"All students were safely evacuated and accounted for, while the Fire Department investigated the concern. The source of the burning order was a motor in a roof top ventilation unit, likely caused by the brown-out yesterday associated with the DTE issue," the email said.

The evacuated students stayed warm inside buses, which were dispatched to the building to provide temporary shelter and moved off site after students boarded, according to the email. As of 11:15 a.m., the Fire Department Incident Commander declared the building safe. The buses returned to the school and classes will remain in session for the rest of the day, the email said.

"The Fire Department Incident Commander provided very positive feedback regarding how the school staff and students handled this situation, and likewise remarked on how quickly buses arrived to assist with the evacuation," Gallagher said in her email.
