What's the School Boundary Transition Plan?

The Northville schools board of education will reassign more than 300 elementary and middle school students.

Ken Roth, Northville schools board of education president, said the board chose to change the school boundaries now instead of at the end of the school year.

"So we have the ability to lay plenty of groundwork for a transition plan," he said.

That transition plans starts with letters home to all families affected by the boundary changes, said Superintendent Mary Kay Gallagher. The letters, which now should have been sent, include welcome notes from school principals and details on open enrollment.

Open enrollment is an option for students who don't want to transfer schools. However, it is a year-to-year process so there is no guarantee that a student will be accepted each year, she said. The deadline for submitting an open enrollment request is May 3.

The board voted to adopt Elementary Option 1, which reassigns a portion of the current Ridge Wood attendance area to Winchester Elementary School. See a map here.

The board also voted to adopt Middle School Option 4, which moves a portion of the current Ridge Wood/Meads Mill attendance area to a Ridge Wood/Hillside attendance area. See a map here.

The next steps are principals visiting the schools and speaking with transferring students, small group tours at the schools and student visitation during school days, Gallagher said.

At the schools impacted by the boundary changes, students who have one year left in their current school of attendance will be given priority for open enrollment, she said in a district email.

That applies to current fourth grade students impacted by the elementary attendance boundary change and current seventh grade students impacted by the middle school attendance boundary change, she said.
