At the Farmers Market: Change

How boring it must be to live where the seasons don't change as drastically as they do here in the Midwest. It's summertime in Michigan!

How boring it must be to live where the seasons don't change as drastically as they do here in the Midwest!  It's summertime in Michigan--rich, green and full.

At the Northville Farmers Market, the onset of summer is marked by changes every week.  The "flower frenzy" season of buying and planting annuals has slowed down.  Some of our large greenhouse growers are finished now, and gone until next spring, but their spots won't remain empty for long.

Summer at the Market means more spaces for fresh produce from our farmers, and a few new growers coming in.  Summer means an abundance of fresh cut flower bouquets.  Summer means new artisans and crafters have been juried, accepted, and will put their talent on display alongside our regular artists.

Summer cooking can be tough, but fresh, seasonal produce can inspire almost anyone.  Have you tried shallotts in your salads?  Stuffed squash blossoms?  Kohlrabi with dip?  Fresh basil on sandwiches instead of lettucce?  Grilled veggies?  It's all tempting, and available in season.

Remember, we are a "Michigan-Grown" market.  You won't be able to buy sweet corn or watermelon at the Market for your Fourth of July picnic---but by Labor Day it will be ripe and taste great!

If you aren't inspired to cook by the fresh produce offerings at the Market, this summer we offer many new specialty food vendors.  They offer such home-made goodies as pickles, ice cream toppings, pasta & sauce, salad dressings, pastries, breads, goat cheese, smoked sausage, gluten-free baked goods, spiced nuts, and Up-North style pasties.

Still stumped for dinner?  Attend one of our free CHEFS AT THE MARKET sessions on a Thursday morning at 9:00.  Local chefs talk about food, cooking, recipes, demonstrate a recipe, provide samples and a copy of the recipe for you to take home and try.  You can also purchase a copy of our mini-cookbook BEST OF THE CHEFS.  It's full of recipes using fresh, seasonal Michigan produce and products.

Changing seasons...you bring changes to our gardens, our schedules, our dinner tables, our Farmers Market offerings, and our vendor locations...

Welcome summer!
