Hockey Program Recalls Lost Michigan Stories – and Plymouth-Canton Connection at Sochi 2014

Be sure to wear your favorite hockey jersey to Sunday's presentation at the Canton Public Library, part of Hockey Weekend Across America.

Michigan’s rich hockey landscape just didn’t happen overnight.

It was put together game by game, anecdote by anecdote – many of them lost in the annals of history.

Veteran broadcaster Raymond Rolak will  showcase some of the stories as the hockey chronicles of both peninsulas of Michigan are celebrated at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at the Canton Public Library, 1200 S. Canton Center Road.

The event is part of the Hockey Weekend Across America promotion sponsored by USA Hockey to promote hockey on both a local and national level.

Rolak’s multi-media presentation will show the timeline of college hockey, including the explanation behind the Big Ten hockey championship being awarded to Michigan State in 1959. Former Canton resident Tom Mustonen, now a retired educator, was a contributing member of that team.

Other local connections to international hockey will be discussed. Ryan Kesler, a Team USA member at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, has a special Plymouth-Canton connection along with the amazing hockey pedigree of teammate Ryan Miller.

Rolak will share rare footage from the award winning docu-drama, “King of Hockey.” It is the journey of the 1987 Hobey Baker Award.  ]He will also talk about his contributions to the just released book, “TRIBES: An International History of Hockey.”  Of special note is the narrative of President John F. Kennedy’s connection to the 1963 U.S. National Team.

Advancements in diversity and the growth of women’s hockey will also be presented.  Audience members are encouraged to wear their favorite jerseys.
