Northville Girls Basketball Game Benefits American Cancer Society

The Mustangs played against Livonia Stevenson and won 42-28.

—Submitted by Coach Todd Gudith

Northville Girls Basketball hosted their annual Coaches vs. Cancer game Tuesday night. As part of a national program with the American Cancer Society and the National Basketball Coaches Association, the teams played the game with a pink basketball while the coaching staff wore tennis shoes with their game attire to raise awareness of the disease. The girls sold Wall of Hope cards with all proceeds being donated to the American Cancer Society.

Stevenson came out with a press and active half court zone defense to try to get after the Mustangs. Northville had no issue with press and found plenty of shot opportunities early as Brittany Berehulka buried two 3-point shots in the quarter along with three baskets by Gabby Mencotti to give the Mustangs a 14-10 lead after the 1st quarter. Northville's defense did not give up a basket in the 2nd quarter, allowing only two foul shots which help propel the Mustangs to a 21-12 halftime advantage.

Stevenson found some life in the 3rd quarter as the Mustangs were held to just six points with just one basket by Diane Myers late in the quarter. Stevenson hit four shots in the quarter to trim the lead to just four going into the fourth quarter. Northville's patience on offense paid off as they used the clock to their advantage and scored a few easy baskets inside while cashing in from the foul line (6-7 FT in the 4th quarter and 11-14 FT for the game) to seal the game.  Northville's Heather Randall returned to action after missing the past three weeks with an ankle injury. She chipped in nine points.

Northville 10-3 overall, 5-2 division, host division leader Novi Friday at 5:30 p.m.—part of a varsity double-header with the boys game to follow at 7 p.m.
