In the Mustangs' varsity girls soccer home opener, the team beat Walled Lake Western High School by a score of 7-0.
"We got to try a lot of little things, do some experimentation," coach Eric Brucker said of the game. "I'm pleased with our patience in the offensive end… we are finding the best option for quality scoring opportunities. Now we have to stay focused as Spring Break approaches, we play two very good teams in Canton and Plymouth next week."
Highlights from the first half of the game, according to Brucker, include:
junior Gabbie Guibord's pass across the 18 yards box to Sophomore Megan Buckingham to fire a shot past the keeper. Forty seconds later, senior Mallory Weber corralled a deflection off a Jamie Cheslik shot and pushed it passed the goal-line.
Later, sophomore Rachel Yaggi found a wide open Junior Emily Bush on the back post on a left to right cross. Bush again found the back of the net when she slide to poke an errant shot from Sophomore Jamie Cheslik in to the net.
In the second half, Mallory Weber received a short pass from Bush about 15 yards out. Weber turned fired and hit the bottom of the crossbar; the ball bounced behind the keeper and in. At the 68 minute mark, Emily Bush completed her hat-trick with her third goal of the game. Cheslik laced a shot off the left goal post. Bush grabbed the rebound and placed it passed the keeper. Senior Sam Jarrett also got her first goal of the year from a left to right cross from Senior Jenni Borawski.
