Northville Rowers Compete in State Championship Regatta

Yannis and Laki Papoulis brought home a silver medal.

- From a Northville Rowing Club press release

Northville Rowing Club traveled to the Grand River in Grand Rapids this past Saturday, May 19 to compete in the 2012 Scholastic Rowing Association State Championship Regatta.

Weather conditions were perfect for racing on the 1500 meter course, and the Mustangs took advantage of the fast, calm water in the semifinal heats to place eight of their twelve entries into the finals.

An excellent day of racing was made even more remarkable, as just one year ago NRC was still in its founding stages, needing to rent boats and sending only one team to the finals.

The Mens Junior 4+ boat (Zac Butler, Mitchell Robinet, Dilan Varghese, Jake Winter and coxswain John Garrity) placed second in their heat and third overall in 5:41.38 to bring home the Bronze Medal.

Northville boasts two more top finishes - the Mens Varsity 2 Scull, with the rowing team of brothers Yannis and Laki Papoulis finished second in their heat and second in the finals with a time of 6:04.40 earning them a Silver Medal.

Yannis Papoulis took advantage of the beautiful weather once again in the Mens Varsity Single Scull, to triumph with his second Silver Medal of the regatta.

Rowing Director Van Papoulis commented, “All in all I’m very pleased with the performance of the team! Although we are a new team, we were able to get two silver medals and a bronze in the State Championship! With a little more hard work we’ll come back stronger next year!”

Northville Rowing Club travels to Fanshawe Lake in London, Ontario this weekend to compete in the Western Ontario Regatta.
