Northville Sharks Win All-Star Tournament

Offense propels team to victory in championship game.

It was a slugging match for sure, but in the end, it was the Northville Sharks who came away with the title in the Northville Baseball-Softball Association’s Boys Coach Pitch All-Star Tournament on July 31.

The Sharks took down the Northville Wolverines in the championship game, 14-10. It was a little bit of revenge as the Wolverines had sent the Sharks into the loser’s bracket the day before.

“It was a really good tournament,” said Chris Max, commissioner of both the Boys Coach Pitch and Co-Ed T-Ball divisions. “Each team won at least one game. There was a lot of tight competition, lots of good plays.

“Even the younger guys won a game. It just shows how competitive our local teams are, even at the younger age groups.”

The tournament consisted of six teams, five from the BCP division and the Camo All Stars, who won the T-ball tournament on July 18. Sam Lutz coached the Sharks and Jeff Kane coached the Wolverines. The other three teams were coached by Dan Metzger, Chris Parenti and Jeff Harp.

“We have 18 teams in the league,” Max said. “Each coach submitted nominations of kids from their teams. The five all-star coaches got together and made their picks and the rest were chosen out of a hat.”

The tournament was double-elimination play with each team playing a minimum of three games and a max of five.

The Wolverines went through the winner’s bracket undefeated and finished 2-1. The Sharks made their way to the title game through the loser’s bracket and finished 4-1 overall.

In the championship game, the Sharks struck first, scoring five runs in the first inning. Nick Roerig’s two-run double was key in the scoring barrage.

The Wolverines answered with five runs of their own, keyed by a two-run single by Luke Tardich in the bottom of the first.

The Sharks added to their tally with five more runs in the second inning. Josh Lutz had two RBIs and Billy Shields, Nick Yamine, Andrew Creighton, Brett Rudolph and Brenden Max all had key hits.

Not to be outdone, the Wolverines put five more runs on the board in the second, all with two outs. Brad Gayner , Brady Kane, Jake Willerer, Wesley Guyot, Nathan Herberholz and Reece Jones all contributed.

The defense showed up for both teams in the third inning as Willerer and Jones made key plays for the Wolverines and the Sharks were led by Aidan Oliver, Connor Appligian, Harrison Neal and Creighton.

In the fourth, the Sharks took the lead for good, scoring four runs on eight hits. Jake Bisdorf, Shields and Yamine all had clutch hits.

Thanks to some strong defense by Roerig and Brenden Max the Sharks held on for the win.
