Northville Track Qualifies in Four Events for State Competition

Boys win two regional titles; girls qualify relay and high-jumper.

MILFORD — The Northville boys track team finished with two titles at the Division 1 regional at Milford High School on Friday.

Senior Al Myers won the high jump with a height of 6 feet, three inches and Edward Clifton, a junior, won the 800-meter run in a time of one minute, 56.2 seconds.

“They’re both repeat qualifiers for the state meet,” Northville coach Gordon McIntosh said.

The Mustangs boys finished with 20 points, placing 13th out of 16 teams. Detroit Catholic Central won the regional with 110 points.

On the girls side, the Mustangs also qualified for states in two events. Alexandra Moynes placed second in the high jump (5-2), which automatically earns her a trip to states.

In the 3,200 relay, Northville’s Beth Roach, Taleen Shahrigian, Hallie Tyburski and Erin Zimmer placed sixth, but qualified based on their time, a 9:47.60.

The Mustangs earned 45 points and placed seventh out of 16 teams. Novi won the regional with 117 points.

“This is my first year taking over the team,” Northville girls coach Vincent Tyle said. “I’m extremely satisfied. We have a young team, but the girls gave it their all.”

Clifton, who won the 800 by seventh-tenths of a second, was pleased with his efforts.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Clifton said. “I barely qualified last season, finishing in sixth place, and for the next year to be in first, it’s an exciting feeling.”

Clifton attributed his success to his coaches.

The state finals are June 4 at Rockford. The top two finishers in each event at the regionals and those who meet the time requirements qualify.

Northville’s Alexa Abbott placed fifth in the 100 (13.00). She was also part of the seventh-place 800 relay team, along with Kelly Colleran, Morgan Malloy and Mary Kay Brzezinski. Abbott was also fourth in the 200 (27.10).

In the 400 relay, the Mustangs finished seventh (52.20). Leah Bedrosian, Laura Cheaney, Abbott and Malloy made up the team.

Gina McNamara placed fifth in the 400 (1:00.70); Brzezinski was seventh in the 300 hurdles (48.10), third in the 200 (26.80) and third in the long jump (16-2.75); and Moynes was seventh in the discus (102-3).

“Mary Kay is a senior captain and she just missed out on states,” Tyle said. “But she’s set the perfect stepping stone for the future of this program and we’re really going to miss her.”
