Northville Varsity Girls Basketball Beats South Lyon East, 53-31

Students Brittany Berehulka, Aly Bates and Alex Moynes were the team's top scorers.

On Friday, Northville's varsity girls basketball team completed its first round of division play with a 53-31 win over South Lyon East.

Here's some highlights provided by the team coach Todd Gudith:

"Northville started strong thanks to solid team defense which led to some early Cougar turnovers. Northville shared the basketball offensivley as all 5 starters scored in the opening quarter. The strong offensive performance continued in the 2nd quarter as Brittany Berehulka hit two of her three triples in the period to keep the scoreboard moving up."

He added that 11 of 12 Mustangs scored Friday night, as the team shot 45 percent from the field.

"It was a nice all around win," Gudith said. "Not only did we shoot the ball well, but we made the extra pass and set our team mates up and that was good to see us sharing the ball like that."

Northville also proved tough defensively. Gudith said of the team, "we outrebounded East and rebounding has been something we've been emphasizing."

Northville is now tied with Novi High School for second place (3-2) while Stevenson (4-1) is in first in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association.

"We knew that it would be a long haul to win this division because anybody could beat anyone else on any given night, that's how balanced it is," Gudith said. "It's frustrating the way we started out going 0-2 (losing by 3 and 1 point), but at the same time we know that when we are playing at our best we are tough to beat and can determine our own fate."
