Northville Dons Red, White, Blue for Independence Day Parade

The Northville Independence Parade will celebrate the birthday of our country on July 4 by filling the streets of downtown Northville.

Hosted by the Northville Community Foundation and sponsored by St. Mary Mercy Hospital, the Northville Independence Day Parade will take place on July 4 at 10 a.m.  As the largest one-day event held downtown, Northville is proud to have its streets covered in red, white and blue on this special day.

The parade will begin on Griswold with the singing of the National Anthem in front of City Hall by the Ward Presbyterian Church Choir.  It will then travel to Main, from Main to Rogers, Rogers to Cady, Cady to Wing, and Wing to Fairbrook.  Two flyovers will bring everyone’s attention up toward the sky when the Civil Air Patrol flies over at 10:10 a.m. and the Tuskegee Military Airmen follow at 10:30 a.m.

Northville has had an Independence Day parade for over 150 years, with a different theme each time.  This year’s theme is ‘America:  Yesterday, Today, and Forever,’ said Shari Peters, president of the Northville Community Foundation.

Not only does this event celebrate the birthday of our country, but it also demonstrates that Northville will always remember its history and the importance of our country, Peters said.

With only a few days left until the big day, floats are being finished, bands and clowns are busy practicing their performances, pets are being combed for the Pet Parade, and kids are adding final bells and whistles to their bikes for the Bike Parade.

A bike decorating contest will take place at the northwest parking lot at Center Street and 7 Mile, with judging beginning at 9:30 a.m.  Meijer will award a gift certificate to the two best decorated bikes, one to the winner of a girl’s bike and another to the decorator of a boy’s bike.

Many famous cars and characters will be included in the parade as well, such as the Green Hornet, the Monkey Mobile, The Oscar Meyer Weiner Mobile, Herbie the Love Bug, and the Tooth Fairy.
