Kids Against Hunger Organizers Hope to Raise $10,000 at Saturday Fundraiser

It's the third year for the Have a Heart for Hunger Soup Supper.

Students, parents, teachers and other community members will work side-by-side Saturday to fill bags of non-perishable goods to benefit the less fortunate in the Detroit area and around the world.

"Our goal is to make this a community-wide event," said one of the Kids Against Hunger event's organizers Dottie Garrity. "Even though it is our elementary students participating."

The event, which will also include a soup supper, will benefit Kids Against Hunger. It will be held at on Saturday from 4-7 p.m. The group seeks to build a bridge between children in Northville and children in the inner-city, Garrity said.

"The unique part of Kids Against Hunger is this: we have kids from Northville, Detroit, Hamtramck, coming together to one location. They’re working together, problem-solving, to benefit other children around the world," she said. "The benefit to our community as a whole is just furthering the mission of our district to graduate world class citizens."

The bags themselves will be filled with rice, soy and other goods. It takes about 28 cents to fill each bag, she said. Last year, 90,000 bags were filled.

The soup supper will take place between the high school's productions of It's a Wonderful Life. Proceeds will go to fund the cost of the program and food used.

Garrity said that they hope to raise $10,000 at the event. In each of the past two years, the group exceeded that goal, raising about $13,000 each year.
