- Submitted by Karen Bunting, of the American Association of University Women - Northville-Novi

AAUW-NN volunteers read in over 50 classrooms to over 1,000 Northville and Novi public school students during March in celebration of National Reading Month and Women’s History Month.

As part of AAUW-NN’s “Remember the Ladies Project” throughout March, students in grades K -5 in both districts heard biographical stories of a wide range of women such as Annie Oakley, Mae Jemison, Jane Goodall, Julia Morgan, Helen Keller, women inventors and many other fascinating women. It was mostly about students and AAUW-NN readers having a good time together enjoying a book about a woman in history.

AAUW-NN members who volunteered and participated as readers were:

  • Jeri Alam
  • Vickie Dickieson
  • Kathy Scullen
  • Karen Bunting
  • Joy Huyck
  • Rev. June Smith
  • Julie Collins
  • Gwen Markham
  • Jill Streit
  • Colleen Crossey
  • Pat Noworyta
  • Rhonda York
  • Cheryl Deep
  • Connie Qualman
  • Karen Zyczynski

In addition to AAUW-NN reader volunteers, donations of least $50 are made
to each school in both districts by AAUW-NN members and the local AAUW-NN
branch for the purchase of media center materials. The AAUW-NN “Remember
the Ladies Project” is a collaborative effort in our community and local schools to provide:

  • Donations to public school libraries/media centers for the purchase of age appropriate materials about women and women’s issues for all children.
  • Volunteer readers of books about women and women’s issues during the month of March in celebration of National Reading Month and National Women’s History Month.
