The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Michigan's ban on affirmative action in college admissions.
Maria Young April 23, 2014 at 08:25 am
Its about time. Now do the same in other states and in the state workforce too. Cleanup upRead More America, grow the economy? Thats a start, anyone running a business knows this. These people must change their culture, thats why they have so many failures and I am tired of hearing the same spin for 30 years.
Steven Serebrenik April 23, 2014 at 09:05 am
I believe that affirmative action had it's place in history. It helped a lot of black people butRead More adversely affected a lot of white people who could not get student loans and jobs....It seemed at the time that after all that had been done to black people, this was the way to go. I'm speaking of the 60's. This is 50 years later. Black people have progressed. In my mind, white people have been redeemed by now. Otherwise, when does it end. It's like a tax...NEVER. HOW FAIR IS THAT?
Keith Cox April 23, 2014 at 09:34 am
Affirmative action IS racism!! This is a win!!
A convicted killer went on an hour-long tirade in which he blamed others for his fate during his sentencing Monday before Judge John Hulsing, who threatened to silence him with duct tape. (Screenshot: WZZM video)

You would think as one gets older their spelling would improve. The other day I typed sight insteadRead More of site. I am not about to delete and retype a comment over one word though I did not feel confident with that spelling immediately. At least you remember that series. Did you know the real judge Bean was not really a judge. I am thinking about writing a story about a mayor who was not really a mayor.
Lee Jacobsen April 23, 2014 at 04:12 am
Duct tape keeps the world together. Both of those low lifes deserved duct tape, and a lot moreRead More misconfort. We always seem to forget the victims. Both killers should be hung from their necks with duct tape....they don't deserve life.
K. Scott April 23, 2014 at 08:44 am
Silence is golden. Duct tape is silver.
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.
CowDung April 23, 2014 at 09:18 am
"School boards dont actually read the textbooks they order, unless there are complaints, andRead More honestly, I didnt notice either until the CC thing came up. Then I said "What the hell is this?" " ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: That is one good thing that is coming from all the propagandists fighting against the Common Core Standards--it seems that most are actually looking at their kid's textbooks for the first time. They wrongly blame school curriculum choices on Common Core, but at least they are starting to pay attention to what their kids are doing in school.

Oh, this just in. Product placement on the PARCC exam. "A busboy spills a MUG rootbeer. Mug isRead More a trademark of the Pepsi Cola company...." and a story about perseverance, as encapsulated in the Nike Slogan, Just do it, copyright Nike , Inc. No wonder there is a gag order about the contents of the exam. They don't want parents to know. Does that NOT frighten you? Or at least piss you off? Remeber learning in school about subliminal advertising, how movie thewatres used to flash "drink Coca-Cola" every few frames, so fast it was not picked up consciously by movie-goers, but succeeded in increasing concession sales? Who exactly is regulating the content of the tests? There should be NO marketing to children in schools. Like I said, the idea of national standards sounds so reasonable, but they way this has been implemented, and the HUGE amounts of money poured in ALL by companies that stand to profit from a "market" for and of EVERY schoolchild in America, makes this "product", CC and all it's related materials, tainted. Suspect. And you think you can send your child to private school? Most have to adopt CC, because the architect of the CC, David Coleman, is now the President of the College Board, and will be designing the SAT's to reflect whatever the hell he decided already should be the qualifications for college readiness. Do you see the levels of conflict of interest here? Oh, and Home-schooling. Pearson publishing has spent the last couple of years quietly accumulating a portfolio of on-line home school providers. Good luck figuring out which ones.
Jennifer April 23, 2014 at 09:32 am
Other "countries" have national standards, but most of the "countries" cited areRead More the size of one of our States. There is an International Baccalaureate that is common to western Europe, but it is also offered at (very few) high schools in the US. Why very few? Because it is much more rigorous than most "national" standards, including the common core.

U. of M. blatantly discriminated against white students for years. They were fulfilling an internalRead More quota to artificially diversify the racial make-up of the University. They got exposed and it got fixed. Now admissions are truly performance-based with no preferences for anyone...that's how it ought to be.
cookiepro2 April 22, 2014 at 11:15 pm
Well, that's nice to know, Racer Boy. I still think much of the selection process is shrouded inRead More mystery. For instance is there a quota based on limiting number of acceptees from particular Michigan high schools? What about gender bias? My son was accepted in the engineering school, if there had been a female with equal performance, should she have gotten the nod over him? I would tend to agree with that given the low ratio of female engineering students that he encountered in his years there. I think any time you have a selective school that doesn't accept every applicant, there is going to be someone unhappy. Exception may be athletics and music, one clearly has to have the talent (demonstrated on the HS athletic field, or through competitive audition) to get in.
The Village Malcontent April 23, 2014 at 08:53 am
This decision is really about the right of voters in a state to amend their own constitution, notRead More affirmative action. I do think we have gotten crazy with the issue though, because it's not that minorities are claiming their race prevents them from gaining admission to college just elite colleges, apparently. If you want an education you can get one and just like white people who don't get in to elite colleges they go elsewhere and make the best of the situation and themselves. No one ever hears ,of the less than qualified admissions to elite schools , how many of them actually graduate and in what time period. Does anyone wonder how this affects the so called benefited individual? It may well be they continue to have chips on their shoulder for years and years.

Funny how Netflix is the "bad boy" yet those that offer more commercials than the movieRead More itself are just fine :) Cable today is pure garbage, a 2 hr movie will last half the night with all those commercials and since all sports from all countries, could be seen live over the internet...cable is obsolete. Netflix is weak but is a fine alternative to cable for now. (as for news, please, you must be brain-dead to get your news from cable...with all of them all over you from second you start the computer to turn on the radio to even the second you "check" the e-mail on the phone. so Reuters don't worry about Netflix, worry about cable companies whose stocks should be worth a little more than half an ounce of dirt

Has anyone here looked into topical pain management to fight arthritis pain? These prescription painRead More gels provide relief when and where you need it with no side effects or pills. I highly suggest looking into it. If you want to know more, please ask or look up A&R Pharmacy. They answered all my questions and got me on the path to living normally again.

I had a virus a few years ago (around age 30) that gave me symptoms like arthritis and the docsRead More treated me with arthritis meds while the virus did it's course. Anyway, it was miserable. My joints were swollen and painful and I also thought this is only supposed to happen to older people. I couldn't imagine having it as a child knowing it progressively gets worse. that has to be tough. I only dealt with it a few weeks and it went away. :-( Those kids are tough! I hope they find better treatments.
Steve Utash is still unable to distinguish reality from delusions nearly three weeks after he was attacked by a mob on Detroit's east side, his family says. (Go Fund Me photo)
RON Ostrodamus April 22, 2014 at 01:21 pm
Thugs AND racists. These are terms excusing those who drop down to the level of mob, or what I wouldRead More describe more as pack behavior found in the animal kingdom. Society has failed to deal with this problem for centuries. It just tries to define it with labels. That these monsters still exhibit the same behavior in the courtroom conclusively defines this as a hate crime. The scary part is that someday they will be turned loose to do whatever they please. A good reason to carry protection in the world these creeps inhabit.
RON Ostrodamus April 22, 2014 at 01:44 pm
Add that as "Cummings" brandished a handgun at Utash before shouting "I am going toRead More kill him" underscores the need for stop and frisk no matter the outcry that this is discriminatory in a mostly African American neighborhood. I am sick and tired of seeing the race card played when public safety for ALL is as stake. I would take being frisked over being beaten, or shot to death anytime. That sensitivity and better police training is needed in these situations is a given. I am sure all citizens living in a high crime area would prefer extended police powers to more crime.
Racer Boy April 22, 2014 at 05:57 pm
I TOTALLY agree on "stop and frisk" policies. But, all citizens living in high crime areasRead More DO NOT prefer extended Police powers. As a matter of fact, they hate the police, they refuse to "rat" on those criminals that inhabit their neighborhoods, they work to stymie crime solving. You clearly have spent no time in the jungles of Detroit or you would not have made that statement.

Dorie, stowing away on a plane is a crime. And no, the boy himself did not pose a threat. But theRead More fact that he (anyone) can get that close to a plane poses a threat. I have to take off my flippin' shoes and get patted down, but apparently you can just walk up and plant a bomb in the wheel well.
april ann April 22, 2014 at 01:30 pm
I agree with B. Dub 100%! How was this kid able to scale a fence and just walk right over to theRead More plane? TSA: for all the harassing you do in the terminal...you ain't all that!! As far as the kid being a runaway..maybe he does face some serious abuse issues at home. He's damn lucky to be alive. But, I raised three boys, and a 16 year old boy can runaway for any collage of reasons. My kids never ran away but, I'm wondering if the fact that the plane was going to HAWAII has anything to do with it. It sounds a little compulsive to me. CPA need good follow up on this. Thank you lucky stars kid!

Who paid for this headline - the same big government and big business that is taking over ourRead More schools with Common Core? People that are trying to profit off our children and do not care about them at all. They are trying to get us to buy into their sales pitch that we have any local control at all? What a joke - local control is lost. More money is not going to cover the huge expenses that are coming with Common Core either. Too much to post here - but if you care about our children at all - check out this new Facebook page: Northville MI Parents for Educational Excellence It was made by a group of local parents that are trying to educate others (citizens in and around Northville) about Common Core and other issues. Issues like the inapropriate and inaccurate lessons, the exodus of our school leadership, the realities and cost of IB, etc.
Joan April 23, 2014 at 01:08 am
I am sorry to say that many parents are unaware of the current situation in our MI schools. ManyRead More parents are unaware of the Federal program being implemented in our schools, called Common Core. When I started to review the curriculum and the assessment testing is occurring, it became evident that students are being tested to the test and the classroom grades don't even matter. Parents also need to be aware. Also the students private data, along with their parents specific data is being collected outside the district. The school curriculum is being modified, and is inappropriate in many ways. I have suggest everyone start researching Common Core. From my perspective MI and Northville Schools are headed in the wrong direction!
