A female teen was approached by an unkown man in Hines Park Friday evening who asked her to unbutton and pull down her pants to avoid getting in trouble. The incident occurred in the playground area near Seven Mile Road and Hines Drive at about 5:30 p.m. According to a city of Northville police department alert: the girl was with a male teen when they were approached by the man. He was carrying a hand-held radio, similar to a walkie talkie, and told them they were in trouble. The man asked for their identification. He then told the male teen to leave and led the girl to a wooded area. He asked her to face a tree while he searched her purse, according to the alert. The two were found with GPS devices, cash and other items stolen from vehicles.
Two 19-year-olds were arrested on May 10 after Northville Township police found them with multiple items that they are accused of stealing from vehicles around Silver Springs Drive. According to police reports, a woman on the 41000 block of Leidel Court spotted the light on in her Jeep and saw two men inside. One police officer attempted to follow the footprints the men left behind. Another officer then found the men in a car near the Swan Harbour apartments. The 19-year-old Northville resident and 19-year-old South Lyon resident may have also had the synthetic drug known as K2 in the car. A Golden Retriever dog broke free from his owner while on a walk on May 12 and ultimately bit the owner of another dog nearby. According to city police reports, the incident might have been provoked. Two witnesses and the dog owner say that the dog broke free from the owner and ran to the man, who was walking near Elmsmere and Holmbury streets, according to the report. They told police the man grabbed the dog by the collar and did not let go until the dog bit. They also said the man held the dog upright while he was standing on his hind legs. The man who was bitten told police the dog charged him and his dog. He said he got between the two when the other dog jumped on him and bit him. Kevin Alexander of South Lyon is set to appear before a jury on June 5.
Kevin Alexander of South Lyon is scheduled to stand trial in June for the hit-and-run death of 25-year-old Joshua Green of West Bloomfield in December 2011. According to an update from the office of Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy, Alexander was charged with failure to stop at the scene of a serious personal injury accident and will stand trial before a jury in the Third District Court on June 5. This charge has a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine, according to a previous police press release. Maria Miller, spokewoman for the prosecutor's office, declined to comment on the record to Northville Patch about whether Alexander pleaded guilty or not guilty. Andrew Kirby, 26, started his new job Monday.
He was one of 72 applicants for a police officer job with the city of Northville. On Monday, Northville native Andrew Kirby officially embarked on his new job with the police force. He was sworn in and took to the streets as a patrol officer. "I'd like to stay here for my career," the 26-year-old said. "I'm excited to be here." Kirby, a graduate of Northville High School, was previously employed by the Sylvan Lake Police Department for about a year. He said that just like Northville, Sylvan Lake was a small community. "I like interacting with citizens," he said. Kirby hopes city residents will find in him someone who is a "hard worker and dedicated." During a routine check of the Seven Mile property, the former psychiatric hospital site, Northville Township police discovered four people trespassing on May 7 at around 1:45 a.m. According to police reports, the four said they heard about the property online and checked it out "because they wanted to be scared and see ghosts." They were issued trespassing citations and are due to appear in the 35th District Court in late May. On May 6, a man on the 19000 block of Maxwell Road reported to township police that his riding mower had been stolen. He also said his chainsaw had been stolen. A local restaurateur dished up a little more than a Northville man could handle last week, stopping a theft at Bake Station Too on Orchard Lake south of 13 Mile in Farmington Hills. Travis Andrew George, 33, was arraigned April 26 on a charge of larceny in connection with a crime interrupted by Sunrise Cafe co-owner Emmanuel Parashos. Ten people were cited for trespassing on the Seven Mile Road property, the former psychiatric hospital site, on April 29 at about 2 p.m. while they were trying to make a music video. According to township police reports, the group told the responding officer that they were given permission but could not provide any proof. The band was set up by the main building and ranged in age from 23 to 69 years old. They were cited for trespassing and are due to appear in the 35th District Court in mid-May. 84-year-old woman killed in fire at the Enclave of Novi, no other injuries reported.
A fire Saturday afternoon at the Enclave of Novi, a condominium complex at the 43000 block of Twelve Oaks Crescent, claimed the life of an 84-year-old woman, according to a news release from the Novi Fire Department. At about 2:20 p.m., Novi firefighters responded to a report of smoke at the condominium complex located just southeast of the Twelve Oaks Mall, the release said. The firefighters arrived to find an active structure fire, the release said. Police and fire personnel cleared the building of residents, but received reports that an 84-year old woman was trapped on an upper floor. Smoke at Thornton Creek led to an evacuation of the school on Thursday.
Classes resumed Thursday afternoon at Thornton Creek Elementary School after smoke was noticed in two classrooms leading to a school evacuation. According to a school district email, the damage was not serious. A small fire started in a fan motor. "The fire has been extinguished and the area has been aired out. Both the Fire Chief and the Police Chief have declared the building safe for return to classrooms," according to the email. The students were placed on school buses when the incident happend at 12:45 p.m. to keep them warm and to be ready for transportation to another location if necessary. About an hour later, the classes resumed.
