American Red Cross of Southeastern Michigan shares ways local residents can support those affected by the disaster.
Dozens of people – including children – were killed when a massive tornado Monday afternoon ripped through the town of Moore, Okla., a suburb of Oklahoma City, according to the Associated Press. As search-and-rescue crews continue to dig through the rubble, many people are wondering what they can do to help those affected by the disaster. John Mozena, spokesperson for the American Red Cross of Southeastern Michigan, said the organization should know more later today about exactly how much help is needed. "We're still in the assessment phase of what's going on in Oklahoma with our disaster assessment professionals," he said. When a fire ravaged through an apartment complex Thursday in Plymouth Township, representatives from the American Red Cross and Salvation Army were there to help.
Little could be done Thursday to console the residents in 16 apartments units who lost personal property and pets in an apartment fire that morning that ravaged through the Lake Pointe Village Apartments in Plymouth Township. Representatives from the American Red Cross and Salvation Army, however, arrived at the scene to offer any help they could to get the residents through a difficult time. The service groups were on hand Thursday to offer blankets and warm beverages to residents and firefighters, while helping displaced residents find a place to stay for the next couple of days and replace clothing lost in the blaze. On Friday, the Plymouth Whalers will be out for blood. The Whalers are teaming up with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive from noon-6 p.m. Friday at Compuware Arena. Hurricane Sandy has forced the cancellation of approximately 300 American Red Cross blood drives in 14 states along the East Coast, resulting in a shortfall of more than 9,000 units of blood and platelet donations. A recent outbreak of colds and influenza in southeast Michigan has caused many individuals who had intended to donate blood to tell the Red Cross they can't give right now due to illness. Unfortunately, that means the blood supply in local hospitals and medical facilities in southeast Michigan is dwindling quickly, causing the Red Cross to issue an urgent plea for healthy blood donors to step forward and give.
