Today is Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent for Christians—the season before Easter meant for penance, reflection and fasting. For the next 40 days, many Chrisitans will choose to fast by giving up some sort of luxury, such as chocolate or Facebook. Many Christians also opt to "take on" something, such as spending more time with loved ones or helping the poor. Recently, many non-Christians have also participated in giving up something during Lent. What are you giving up for Lent this year? Do you have a creative idea for something to give up or take on? Novi United Methodist Church will give the ritual blessing for Ash Wednesday to Christians who pull up in their cars.
Too busy to go to Ash Wednesday service tomorrow? Just pull through the drive-through. Novi United Methodist Church will be offering blessings to anyone who pulls through the parking lot from 7:30-9 a.m. Wednesday morning—and you don't even have to get out of your car. Rev. June Smith said the service of marking ashes in the shape of the cross on the foreheads of the adherents will be offered in drive-through fashion for the first time this year. She said she decided to offer the service after a Roman Catholic woman came to Novi United Methodist three years ago, looking for ashes, but no church was open. "It's been on my heart ever since," Smith said. "How can I do this so people can at least come have ashes, then be on there way to work…

Ash Wednesday is a special day which marks the start of the Easter season, or lent, for Christians around the world. Locally, several Churches will observe the day. Here are some of the service times offered in Northville: Our Lady of Victory: 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. First Presbyterian Church: 7 p.m. First Church of the Nazarene: 7 p.m. First United Methodist Church of Northville: 7 p.m. Meadowbrook Congregational in Novi: 7:30 p.m. with a potluck beforehand at 6:15 p.m. Do you know of a service time we should add to the list?
