Special Election Wednesday to Pick McCotter's Successor

Residents in the current 11th Congressional District will be asked to vote Wednesday, Sept. 5, to pick someone to fill the remainder of Thaddeus McCotter's term. McCotter resigned from the seat earlier this year.

The much-anticipated special primary election to fill Thaddeus McCotter's (R-Livonia) remaining term will take place next week. The Sept. 5 election is happening on a Wednesday, not the usual Tuesday, after the state set the date in July. In Novi, Clerk Maryanne Cornelius said many people don't understand the difference between the August Primary and this special primary, "Turnout for Sept. 5 is likely to be low. I will be surprised if it's as high as 12 percent," she said in an interview with Novi Patch. In White Lake, Deputy Clerk Cathy Derocher said many people have come in seeking absentee ballots not realizing the notices they were getting were for the Sept. 5 election, not the upcoming November election. Derocher said the clerk's …

Taj for Congress, Stabenow for Senate - serious candidates and two public servants worthy of your support. Senator Stabenow ( www.stabenowforsenate.com ) has done a fine job for the state. While in Congress, her opponent has sponsored "personhood" bills that express the same underlying sentiment that Akin expressed ( http://goo.gl/5Fekc ). He ran a racist Super Bowl ad that was called "very …   more ›

Michigan's 11th District Congressional Races: The Basic Facts

After Thaddeus McCotter decided to leave office early, voters are faced with a confusing voting season. Here's some basic info to help you sort it all out.

The above timeline shows when the elections for the 11th Congressional District will be held and when the winners will take office.   This year's election for a congressional representative for Michigan's 11th District is quite confusing. Not only will residents vote for a representative to start a new term in 2013, but they will also pick someone to serve the remaining few weeks of Thaddeus McCotter's 2012 term after he decided to leave office early. And they will vote for both on the same day. On top of that, the state has been re-districted based on the 2010 Census, which means some voters will cast their ballots for just one of these elections, while some will vote in both. Novi remains in the 11th District, and residents will vote in …
