The team heads to the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Detroit Catholic Central's varsity hockey team won the regional title Saturday. The team beat Brother Rice 3-1. The Shamrocks now move on to play Plymouth High School in the Division 1 Quarterfinals Wednesday, according to the MHSAA website. The game will be held at the Ann Arbor Yost Arena at 7:30 p.m. If they win, CC will face the winner of Wednesday's East Kentwood vs. Muskegon Reeths-Puffer game in the semifinals on Friday. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday. Other teams in the running are Utica Eisenhower, Detroit U-D Jesuit, Brighton and Bay City Central. Do you have any photos of the game? Catholic Central came home big from the individual state wrestling finals this past weekend.
By Danna Castillo MHSAA Individual State Finals were held at the Palace of Auburn Hills this weekend and there was no shortage of Detroit Catholic Central accomplishments. CC sent 12 wrestlers to do battle with the best of the best the State of Michigan had to offer. Of those 12, four are state champions. CC also won the team wrestling state title the week before. Four Catholic Central wrestlers win state crowns after winning team title last week.
Detroit Catholic Central's Robert Coe came home with a Michigan High School Athletic Association individual wrestling state championship Saturday after defeating Parker Tillman from Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central in the 285-pound final. Coe won 3-0 after earning an escape and takedown in the final minute of the third period at the Palace of Auburn Hills. "There is no way I can describe it," Coe said. "It's not as good as winning tema states last week, but it's one of the best feelings in the world." Coe ends the year with a 45-4 record and adds the Division 1 individual championship to the team title Detroit Catholic Central won last week in Battle Creek. By Danna Castillo Detroit Catholic Central won the MHSAA D1 Team State Finals held at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek this weekend in probably the most dramatic fashion possible: a come from behind third period pin by 125-pounder Evan Toth, in what was no doubt deja-vu for both the Shamrocks and Toth. Entering this weekend’s final round of the state tournament, Davison High School and the Catholic Central High School boasted a combined 17 MHSAA titles and three runner-up finishes. Both teams featured a combined 21 ranked wrestlers. The highly-anticipated rematch lived up to the hype, as the Shamrocks pulled out a thrilling 29-26 victory. This is CC’s second straight MHSAA title and 10th overall. The Shamrocks ended this 2013 season 25-3. …

Athletes will descend on Trenton to compete in front of college coaches and scouts at the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League Prep Hockey Showcase Feb. 6-9. One of Detroit Catholic Central's games will be broadcast on TV.
Over 80 scouts packed into the Kennedy Recreation Center last year for the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League (MIHL) Prep Hockey Showcase, and showcase officials are expecting as many or more this year. Over 43 top-ranked high school teams, with hockey players from Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Ontario, are set to play several games over the four-day event, according to an MIHL release. "There's going to be a lot of great hockey and a lot of scouts come from all over the place," said Tim Beaker operations manager at Kennedy. The 13th annual showcase is set for Feb. 6-9. Loved ones and friends will paid their respects to the Catholic Central student who died in his sleep Sunday.
Loved ones and classmates gathered Friday morning to remember David Widzinski, who passed away in his sleep sometime Sunday night into Monday morning. David, 16, was a sophomore at Detroit Catholic Central High School in Novi and lived in Northville. A viewing was held at 9 a.m. Friday, followed by a funeral at 10 a.m. at Catholic Central. David was a linebacker for the CC football team. He is survived by his parents, Paul and Barbara; his sister, Emily; and his brother, Stephen. He is preceded in death by his sister, Kristina Ruth. The cause of death is still unknown. The family has set up a memorial scholarship fund for David that will benefit future Shamrocks who are not able to afford tuition.
