Concours d'Elegance Offers Inaugural VIP Collection Tour in Troy

Limited exhibit offers unique look at historically significant cars spanning several generations.

The Concours d’ Elegance of America is offering its inaugural Annual VIP Collection Tour, a personal, up-close look at two of the most interesting private automobile collections in the country: Ted Stahl’s Automotive Foundation and  the debut of Terry Adderley’s private collection, according to a news release. The exhibit, open to a limited number of people, will take place at 9 a.m. on March 23 at Classic & Exotic Service, Inc., 2032 Heide in Troy. Attendees will begin the day at Classic & Exotic Service, Inc., one of the premier restoration shops in Michigan. Proprietor Brian Joseph, who also chairs the Concours Car Selection Committee, will welcome guests with a brief talk and some morning refreshments. A luxury motor coach will depart …

The Inn at St. John's in Plymouth was alive with fashion and automotive flair Sunday as the 34th annual Concours d'Elegance of America got under way. The Concours d'Elegance, an annual top-of-the-line automotive exhibit, marked its second year in Plymouth, moving last year from its previous venue, Meadowbrook in Rochester. The event drew crowds both locally and around the globe, eager to see one-of-a-kind vehicles up close and personal. Thousands of spectators filled the Inn at St. John's in Plymouth, while more than 300 exhibitors took part Sunday in the 34th annual Concours d'Elegance. Exhibitors showcased cars in a variety of automobile classes, vying for both judges' trophies and spectator votes.  The event offered visitors a chance to relive " the-car-I-should-have never-sold" stories for adults, and make new memories for kids too young to remember a car without an HD television set and video game console in the back seat. Concours Car Profile: 1932 Oldsmobile F-32 Convertible

Oldsmobile convertible, owned by Doug Width of Bloomfield Hills, was an eye-catcher Sunday at the Concours d'Elegance in Plymouth.

Decked out in bright green with dark green accents, a 1932 Oldsmobile F-32 Convertible owned by Doug Width of Bloomfield Hills demanded plenty of attention Sunday at Concours d'Elegance of America at St. John's in Plymouth. While not best in class, the car earned a red ribbon Sunday. The F-32 introduced many firsts for Oldsmobile, which itself was the first auto company to use the assembly line, according to literature accompanying the vehicle on the field. The car featured an automatic choke and throttle advance, which moved the throttle to a start position with the starter medal was depressed. It also was the only year Oldsmobile used a decarbonizer, which would release a chemical when prompted by the driver while leaving the car …

One of the eye-catching cars Sunday at the Concours d'Elegance at St. John's in Plymouth was a rare Stutz coupe.

An eye-catching beauty, the 1929 Stutz Model M Coupe by Lancefield earned best in class in the American Classic Closed 1928-1942 class Sunday at the Concours d'Elegance at the Inn at St. John's in Plymouth. The car is owned by the Mitchell Collection in Montgomery, TX. Stutz, named for its founder, Harry Stutz, was a company with a strong background in engineering, according to literature accompanying the car on display on the grounds of St. John's. The car, along with the Duesenberg, maintained a strong racing presence, and the last Stutz was manufactured in 1934, the literature indicates. The Model M was introduced in 1929, featuring an auxiliary trunk, rumble seat, dual side-mount tires and wire wheels, the literature reads. It is …

High-end cars, bands populate downtown streets Saturday; Concours d'Elegance is today at St. John's.

Downtown Northville saw some extra traffic Saturday when a selection of vintage cars rolled into town. The cars, displayed at a free preview event for today's Concours d'Elegance of America exhibit at St. John's in Plymouth, drew curious spectators while the Sugar Snaps and the Tom Allport Band entertained on the downtown stage. The event both promoted today's Concours d'Elegance, but also brought out-of-town visitors staying at St. John's into downtown Northville, thanks to a free shuttle service, which also will run today. Today's main Concours d'Elegance event starts at 10 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m. at the Inn at St. John's. Tickets are $25. SEE MORE ON PATCH

Vintage vehicles have made their way onto the grounds of the Inn at St. John's in Plymouth for Concours d'Elegance. While the main event isn't until 10 a.m. Sunday, car aficionados were on site for RM Auction's high-profile auto sale, in which Al Capone's bulletproof 1928 Cadillac V-8 netted $341,000 at auction, falling just within the $300,000-500,000 estimated by auction officials.  Separate auto-themed events were being held in Plymouth's Old Village, with Bumpers, Bikes and Bands, and in Northville, which was hosting a preview party late Saturday. Hundreds enjoyed classic cars, bike and rock 'n roll Saturday afternoon in Plymouth's Old Village for the sixth annual Bumpers, Bikes and Bands festival. The event, held this year in tandem with Concours d'Elegance of America just blocks away at the Inn at St. John's, featured a laid-back, family-friendly atmosphere with a free car show, vendors and live entertainment in the heart of Old Village at Starkweather and Liberty streets.
