The Winner of Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America Contest is......

The Pirate Carrying a Mermaid Optical Illusion has been named Patch's Halloween Costume in America. Its creator -- and wearer -- will receive a $5,000 prize for having the most creative and innovative costume.

Ashley Playford dressed up as a pirate carrying a mermaid this Halloween. Well, actually, she dressed up as the mermaid. Well...Her creativity has earned her the title of Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America and a $5,000 grand prize.   It was Playford's use of an optical illusion that won us over. Almost 4,000 Patch users entered the contest from Oct. 15 to Nov. 5, with costumes ranging from the Eiffel Tower and Honey Boo Boo to a flower pot and a clever interpretation of "binders full of women." National judges chose 1 finalist from each Patch state based on who had the most creative and innovative costume (we combined North Carolina & South Carolina for this contest, as well as Washington D.C. and Virginia). Getting Halloween-Ready in Northville (VIDEO)

A lot of effort goes into building the elaborate Halloween displays in the city of Northville. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at the set-up.

Marlene Danol's attic will be getting a lot less cluttered soon. The colorful characters and thematic cutouts that were displayed for two hours a year, over the past 25 years, on her lawn on Halloween night will be getting a new home. Danol is calling it quits on her elaborate yard displays and is donating the items to Northville Parks and Recreation. She'll even be parting with her favorite displays from the year she and her family decorated with a Jungle Book motif. "Every year we picked up different ideas," Danol said. "Every year has been just delightful." Since her husband died and because it is getting to be a lot of work, the family has decided to keep Halloween more low key. Depending on who you talk to, homeowners in the city of Northville give out between 1,000 and 2,000 pieces of candy to trick-or-treaters on Halloween.
