Brighton defeats Shamrocks 2-1 in Division 1 state championship game.
Detroit Catholic Central lost to Brighton High School in the Division 1 hockey state championship game Saturday at Compuware. Michael Yuhasz scored a goal and assisted on another for Brighton, which won the title for the second straight year. Lucas Morgan also had a goal and an assist, and Daniel Bosio had an assist for the Bulldogs. Carson Gatt scored for Catholic Central (22-8 overall record). Brighton defeated Grosse Pointe North 4-3 to win last year's state championship game. The Shamrocks have won seven state titles since 2000, most recently in 2010, according to the MHSAA website. CC will play Brighton for the state title Saturday night.
Detroit Catholic Central High School is looking to capture another state hockey title this year as the varsity team beat East Kentwood 8-0 Friday in the Division 1 semifinals at Compuware Arena in Plymouth. CC will now play Brighton in the championship game Saturday at 6 p.m. at Compuware. Brighton (27-2-1 record) won the state title in 2012. The Shamrocks have won seven state titles since 2000, most recently in 2010, according to the MHSAA website. Fans can watch the game live online at MHSAA.tv or listen to it live at MHSAANetwork.com. Detroit Catholic Central's varsity hockey team won the regional title Saturday. The team beat Brother Rice 3-1. The Shamrocks now move on to play Plymouth High School in the Division 1 Quarterfinals Wednesday, according to the MHSAA website. The game will be held at the Ann Arbor Yost Arena at 7:30 p.m. If they win, CC will face the winner of Wednesday's East Kentwood vs. Muskegon Reeths-Puffer game in the semifinals on Friday. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday. Other teams in the running are Utica Eisenhower, Detroit U-D Jesuit, Brighton and Bay City Central. Do you have any photos of the game? Athletes will descend on Trenton to compete in front of college coaches and scouts at the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League Prep Hockey Showcase Feb. 6-9. One of Detroit Catholic Central's games will be broadcast on TV.
Over 80 scouts packed into the Kennedy Recreation Center last year for the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League (MIHL) Prep Hockey Showcase, and showcase officials are expecting as many or more this year. Over 43 top-ranked high school teams, with hockey players from Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Ontario, are set to play several games over the four-day event, according to an MIHL release. "There's going to be a lot of great hockey and a lot of scouts come from all over the place," said Tim Beaker operations manager at Kennedy. The 13th annual showcase is set for Feb. 6-9. The Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association and the Joe Kocur Foundation for Children will hit the ice at Compuware Arena in Plymouth Dec. 21 to play a charity hockey game, the proceeds of which will be donated to the O'Rourke Family Trust. A Plymouth hockey team is recovering after several players were hospitalized with flu-like symptoms Sunday during a state tournament at a Taylor ice rink. According to parent Tyler Best of Plymouth Township, several Victory Honda Midget AAA 18U players fell ill Sunday before a game against the Little Caesar's AAA team in a Michigan Amateur Hockey Association tournament at Taylor Sportsplex. Tyler Best said he took his 17-year-old son, Drew, home Sunday between games and when they returned to the rink at 5 p.m., several players had already started vomiting between 2-4 p.m. "I didn't know how bad it was until game time," Tyler said. Whalers win two out of three in weekend road trip.
MISSISSAUGA - The Plymouth Whalers exploded for five goals in the third period to snap a 3-3 tie and the Whalers went on to defeat the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors, 8-4, in an Ontario Hockey League game played Sunday afternoon before 1,582 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga. Plymouth now is 6-5-2-0; Mississauga now is 9-3-0-1. The Whalers won two out of three games on the road this weekend, winning 5-1 in Erie on Friday, losing 4-0 in Niagara on Saturday and winning this afternoon in impressive fashion in the third period. Thank goodness that everyone stricken by this illness are expected to fully recover. The thought of replaying, or getting a “bye” because of illness is ridiculous. As I read, the other team also suffered a break out of the same symptoms. This is not a morality or sportsmanship issue; both teams faced the same opponent and suffer from the same symptoms.
