Northville Volleyball Defeats Fenton in State Quarterfinals

Northville advances to state volleyball semifinals with 25-23, 25-13, 25-21 victory.

Northville volleyball coach Amanda Yaklin could sense some nervousness from her team on the bus ride to Davison for Tuesday's state volleyball quarterfinal against Fenton. Those nerves were evident early in the match, as the Mustangs fell behind 5-0 and 8-2 early on. "That's (starting slow) been a pattern for us," Yaklin said. "So I don't burn timeouts on it, I just let them get the nerves out. This was the first time they'd been far away from home, it was a long bus ride and they were just silent and nervous the whole time. I knew when they got through those first few points they'd be OK." Northville chipped away at Fenton's lead in the first game, eventually tying the Tigers at 21 and then winning four of the next six points to win 25-23…

Vote for Northville-Walled Lake Western Match-Up to Be WXYZ-TV's Game of the Week

Friday's Mustangs football game is up for consideration to be the WXYZ-TV Meijer High School Football Game of the Week.

This week's Friday night lights match-up could have a much larger audience than normal. The Northville-Walled Lake Western game is up for consideration to be the WXYZ-TV Meijer High School Football Game of the Week. For the Mustangs, it will be an away game. Five games are in the running for the title. WXYZ sports reporter/producer Brad Galli will report live from whichever game wins the online vote. As of 1:30 p.m., Northville's match-up is last on the list, garnering only 2 percent of the vote. To boost its standing, head to Channel 7's online poll. Leading the poll is the Warren Mott at Sterling Heights Stevenson game with 53 percent of the vote. Voting, according to the station's website, ends at midnight on Wednesday. "Like" us on …

Northville High School Junior Commits to Play Soccer at MSU

Jimmy Fiscus, 16, has accepted a scholarship to play at Michigan State University in 2014.

With the school year just getting underway, most high school juniors aren't thinking about college. But Northville High School junior Jimmy Fiscus has already decided that he is going to Michigan State University (MSU) in 2014. After MSU offered him a scholarship to play soccer a few weeks ago, Jimmy quickly said yes. "I really liked it there. They made me feel like family. Everything about it I liked. They gave me a great offer that I didn't believe I would get anywhere else, so I committed the day after," he said. Jimmy, a Novi resident, has played soccer since he was 4 years old and now plays center back for the high-level U-16 Crew Soccer Academy, one of two academy teams in Michigan. MHSAA Institutes New Rules for High School Football Beginning in 2012

Football teams across Michigan, including those from Northville High, began practice this week while getting used to several new rules from the MHSAA.

The 2012-13 fall sports season officially began this week, when approximately 110,000 student-athletes in Michigan begin practice in eight sports regulated by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). Practice began for Michgan's football players on Monday, followed by all other fall sports — from cross country to boys tennis — on Wednesday. Schools must have 12 days of preseason practice at all levels before their first game. For the Northville High School Mustangs, the varsity team plays their first game of the season on Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. the newly renamed Tom Holzer Ford Field. The team will play Lakeland High School. No. 1 Ranked Northville Girls Soccer Wins In District Playoffs Match-Up Against Novi

The Mustangs will now face Canton High School in the district finals on Saturday.

The Northville High School varsity girls soccer team continued their winning streak Thursday night in a game against Novi, as they move through the district playoffs. The Mustangs beat Novi High School by a score of 3-1. Northville will now take on Canton High School in the district finals on Saturday at noon. "Great win tonight against a great competitor," said coach Eric Brucker. "There was no need for motivational speeches tonight. This team knew what needed to be done and played with energy and passion for 80 minutes. I'm very proud of this team and their effort tonight." VIDEO: Northville High School Girls Soccer Takes on Livonia Churchill Tonight in District Playoffs

The girls beat Hartland last week to win the KLAA Association title.

It has been an exciting season for the Northville High School varsity girls soccer team. After a series of wins, the team added an unprecedented victory to its team record - KLAA Association champs.
