A crowd of students, volunteers and school staff gathered Thursday morning for the grand opening of Thornton Creek Elementary School's new playground.
Children roared and cheered as they tried out the equipment Thursday on Thornton Creek Elementary School's new playground. The playground is not only all new equipment but features an inclusive play design fit for children of all abilities. The school and volunteers raised $105,000 for the playground, said Thornton Creek Principal Alison Epler. Flyers will be available online instead of getting sent home with elementary school students.
Elementary school students are typically sent home with folders full of flyers, which often have information that can be easily found online. Northville Public Schools is starting a green initiative to reduce its carbon footprint. All flyers from nonprofit organizations like parks and recreation, local scouts and the library will be available for viewing online. The idea is to cut costs, reduce paper in students' backpacks and lessen the labor and expense of the district's staff. A committee reaches a unanimous decision to keep “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl – The Definitive Edition" in Northville's curriculum.
A Northville Public Schools material review committee unanimously decided to keep using the unedited version of Anne Frank's diary in order to avoid imposing "situational censorship." The committee assembled last week to review the district's use of “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl – The Definitive Edition,” which got national attention because of a graphic passage describing the female body. "The committee felt strongly that a decision to remove the use of Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl – The Definitive Edition as a choice within this larger unit of study would effectively impose situational censorship by eliminating the opportunity for the deeper study afforded by this edition," said Robert Behnke, assistant superintendent …

The Northville TURF CLUB and its donors are responsible for several upgrades at Tom Holzer Ford Field.
Tom Holzer Ford Field now has new lighting, a press box, multi‐sport scoreboard, audio equipment and artificial turf. All of these improvements were done through Phase I of the Northville TURF CLUB's project to update the school district's athletic stadium. The most visible work is complete, according to an email from Northville athletics, and now the TURF CLUB looks forward to completing the final phase. This year's Night for Northville fundraiser raised enough to complete the funds for Phase II. Northville schools will all get new desktop and laptop computers for $3.5 million.
Northville high school and middle school students will start the 2013-14 school year with new computers and interactive white boards. The technology bond projects were approved by voters in the November 2012 election. The district's technology upgrades start this summer at Northville High School, Hillside Middle School and Meads Mill Middle School. Upgrades at the district's six elementary schools will begin in the fall. The Kids’ Right to Read Project (KRRP) is urging the Northville Public Schools district not to remove the definitive edition of “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl" from its curriculum.
