Flyers will be available online instead of getting sent home with elementary school students.
Elementary school students are typically sent home with folders full of flyers, which often have information that can be easily found online. Northville Public Schools is starting a green initiative to reduce its carbon footprint. All flyers from nonprofit organizations like parks and recreation, local scouts and the library will be available for viewing online. The idea is to cut costs, reduce paper in students' backpacks and lessen the labor and expense of the district's staff. To request that a flyer be posted online, fill out an application form and email waltzka@northville.k12.mi.us. Contact Karen Waltz at 248-344-8442 for more information. Do you think it's a good idea? What other green initiatives do you think Northville schools …

A committee reaches a unanimous decision to keep “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl – The Definitive Edition" in Northville's curriculum.
A Northville Public Schools material review committee unanimously decided to keep using the unedited version of Anne Frank's diary in order to avoid imposing "situational censorship." The committee assembled last week to review the district's use of “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl – The Definitive Edition,” which got national attention because of a graphic passage describing the female body. "The committee felt strongly that a decision to remove the use of Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl – The Definitive Edition as a choice within this larger unit of study would effectively impose situational censorship by eliminating the opportunity for the deeper study afforded by this edition," said Robert Behnke, assistant superintendent …

The letter includes signatures from the book's publisher, the National Council of Teachers of English and the American Society of Journalists and Authors.
The Kids’ Right to Read Project (KRRP) is urging the Northville Public Schools district not to remove the definitive edition of “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl" from its curriculum. This version of Anne Frank’s famous diary is under challenge in Northville because of what some say is a graphic description of the female body. KRRP sent a letter to the district Friday, defending the use of the book in middle school classrooms and libraries. “Anne Frank’s diary is so valuable because it brings students into a world that is at turns very different from their own and extremely familiar. Anne was in fear for her life every day in hiding but at the same time she was experiencing the changes every adolescent faces and her descriptions of …
