The Northville schools board of education will reassign more than 300 elementary and middle school students.
Ken Roth, Northville schools board of education president, said the board chose to change the school boundaries now instead of at the end of the school year. "So we have the ability to lay plenty of groundwork for a transition plan," he said. That transition plans starts with letters home to all families affected by the boundary changes, said Superintendent Mary Kay Gallagher. The letters, which now should have been sent, include welcome notes from school principals and details on open enrollment. Open enrollment is an option for students who don't want to transfer schools. However, it is a year-to-year process so there is no guarantee that a student will be accepted each year, she said. The Northville schools board of education will reassign more than 300 elementary and middle school students.
The Northville schools board of education voted 6-1 late Tuesday night to adopt Option 4 for middle school attendance boundary changes. The board considered changing several elementary and middle school attendance boundaries for the 2013-14 school year because of increased enrollment. This final decision on attendance boundaries came after weeks of public forums and official data studies from consultant firm Plante Moran. "We're dealing with an old school district," said Ken Roth, board president, at Tuesday's board meeting. "These buildings were built 30, 40, 50 years ago. If we were dealing with a clean sheet of paper, we wouldn't locate our schools where they are now." Option 4 will reassign a portion of the current Ridge Wood …

Although the budget amendment brings good news, Superintendent Mary Kay Gallagher said the future of the school's budget is still hard to predict.
The Northville Board of Education approved an amendment to the district budget Tuesday that resulted in a savings of more than $1 million. The reduction of $1,092,821 comes from both an increase in revenue and a decrease in expenditures compared to what was originally budgeted in June. The amendment included several changes to the budget, including the following notable items. A $729,729 increase in revenue was added due to a higher enrollment in the district than what was expected. The June budget estimated 6,966 students to be enrolled full-time, and the blended fall count was 7,057 — an increase of 91. However, a $750,000 decrease in revenue was also added to the budget to establish a health fund for staff. Currently district employees …
