President Barack Obama and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak will tour the General Motors assembly plant in Orion together Friday, according to a press release from the White House. "(They) will be touring briefly a few of the operations, and then both presidents will be making remarks" on the recent trade agreement between the United States and South Korea, General Motors spokeswoman Kim Carpenter said. The tour is not open to the public. The plant tour comes just days after Congress approved the free trade agreement with South Korea. GM began producing the subcompact Chevrolet Sonic at the Orion Township plant a few weeks ago and will soon begin producing the Buick Verano. DETROIT — Thousands of people from throughout Michigan gathered in downtown Detroit Monday afternoon to hear President Obama speak after the annual Labor Day parade. While the president spoke about jobs, labor and the importance of collective bargaining, Patch asked members of the audience to talk about what they would like to see our nation's leaders, as well as those in power locally, do to help the state. President Obama will speak to thousands of people in Detroit on Labor Day. The Michigan Democratic Party will give out hundreds of tickets on Saturday to Monday's event. The annual Detroit Labor Day parade starts 9 a.m. Monday at the Building Trades at Michigan and Trumbull or the AFL-CIO at 9:30 at Mack and Woodward. The president will speak at 1 p.m. just east of the Renaissance Center downtown. Aretha Franklin will sing before his speech. The event is free and open to the public.
