Service Groups Provide Relief for Victims Displaced by Fire

When a fire ravaged through an apartment complex Thursday in Plymouth Township, representatives from the American Red Cross and Salvation Army were there to help.

Little could be done Thursday to console the residents in 16 apartments units who lost personal property and pets in an apartment fire that morning that ravaged through the Lake Pointe Village Apartments in Plymouth Township. Representatives from the American Red Cross and Salvation Army, however, arrived at the scene to offer any help they could to get the residents through a difficult time. The service groups were on hand Thursday to offer blankets and warm beverages to residents and firefighters, while helping displaced residents find a place to stay for the next couple of days and replace clothing lost in the blaze. Detroit Red Wings Raise $24,000 for Salvation Army

Red Wings Coach Mike Babcock and General Manager Ken Holland raised $13,000 from donors in Northville.

Several former and current Detroit Red Wings rang the bell for The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign Tuesday, raising a total of $24,438.69. In a friendly competition between four duos of Red Wings personnel, Coach Mike Babcock and Executive Vice President and General Manager Ken Holland successfully defended their bell ringing title by raising $13,462 for the nonprofit, which included an anonymous $5,000 donation. Red Wings Coach, General Manager to Ring Salvation Army Bell in Northville

Mike Babcock and Ken Holland will ring the Salvation Army bell Tuesday at Hiller's Market.

While the current NHL lockout between owners and players has jeopardized the 2012-13 NHL season, Novi hockey fans still can see some of their favorite Detroit Red Wings in action. Red Wings coach Mike Babcock will join Executive Vice President and General Manager Ken Holland will appear Tuesday, Dec. 11 at Hiller’s Market in Northville from 4:30–6:30 p.m. to raise money for the Salvation Army. Holland is serving as Honorary Chairman of the 2012 Red Kettle Campaign for the seventh straight year. Zack's of Plymouth to Host Fundraiser for Salvation Army

Restaurant to donate 20 percent of funds to organization.

Zack's of Plymouth will host a dinner from 4-10 p.m. April 2 to benefit the Salvation Army Plymouth Corps. Twenty percent of each diner's dinner and drink total will go toward the organization. Northville Man Named to Salvation Army Advisory Board

Dan Ponder has been named to the Metropolitan Detroit Advisory Board.

Northville resident Dan Ponder has been named to the Metropolitan Detroit Advisory Board of the Salvation Army, according to a press release. Ponder is the chief executive officer of Detroit-based Franco Public Relations Group. He and his wife Cathy live in Northville. Some of his volunteer and civic activities include: Chairman of the Board of Michigan Chamber of Commerce and Inaugural Chair of its Energy, Telecommunications & Technology Committee; board member of the Detroit Regional Foundation and member of Detroit Regional Chamber Audit Committee; Immediate Past Chair of Crime Stoppers of Michigan, and member of Henry Ford Estate- Fair Lane Advisory Board. Former Red Wings to Play Troy Teams at Salvation Army Charity Event

Members of the Red Wings Alumni Association will play in a game to raise money to help the homeless and hungry.

Former NHL players will hit the ice Saturday for a charitable cause. The Red Wings Alumni Association is teaming up with Troy athletes in a charity game to benefit the Salvation Army's Bed & Bread Club Radiothon, which will air Feb. 24 on WJR, 760-AM. The Salvation Army's Bed & Bread program serves thousands of meals to the hungry each day and provides shelter for the homeless. Former Red Wings expected to play Saturday include Eddie Mio, John Ogrodnick, Brent Fedyk, Shawn Burr and John Finstrom. Salvation Army Plymouth Corps Nears Holiday Fundraising Goal

Collections continue through end of January, even though bell-ringing season has ended.

The Salvation Army Christmas Fund Raising Campaign for the Northville, Plymouth, Canton and Belleville service area has collected $305,026 — or 96 percent — of its $315,000 Christmas goal for this year, the organization said in a news release. The Red Kettle drive alone has collected $208,503 of its targeted $225,000, according to the news release. Even though the bell-ringing season has ended, those wishing to make contributions still can donate at the Salvation Army Plymouth Corps office, 9451 S. Main Street in Plymouth, before the end of the month.

Salvation Army Just Short of Holiday Goal

Organization still accepting donations through January to meet goal.

The Salvation Army Plymouth Corps' Christmas fundraising campaign for Plymouth, Northville, Canton and Belleville has collected $278,539, according to a news release from the organization. This accounts for 88.4 percent of its $315,000 Christmas goal from this past holiday. According to the news release, the organization's Red Kettle drive has collected $205,699 of its targeted $225,000. Its campaign saw bell-ringers at a variety of businesses in the four communities and included noteworthy bell-ringers such as Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock and general manager Ken Holland in Northville and players Drew Miller and Valtteri Filppula in Plymouth Township. Salvation Army Still Short on 2011 Goals

Plymouth Corps seeks volunteers as holiday fundraising reaches final stretch.

A visit to Plymouth and Northville by some Detroit Red Wings personalities to help ring bells helped the Salvation Army Plymouth Corps catch up with 2010’s donation pace, but the organization still is behind pace for its 2011 goals. Maj. Dan Hull of the Plymouth Corps said the group has raised $94,080 so far this year with its Red Kettle Campaign and is at 41.8 percent of its 2011 goal of $225,000.  Overall, the group’s fundraising has totaled $115,514, at 36.7 percent of its goal of $315,000, including the Red Kettle Campaign.  Sandy Kollinger, volunteer and special events coordinator, said that these numbers are on pace with 2010, but behind what is needed to reach this year’s goals. Red Wings Ring Bells, Raise $17,150 for Salvation Army

Tough on the ice, the Detroit Red Wings showed their softer side Friday when they rang bells and collected money for the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign throughout Metro Detroit.
