What do you think should go at the site of the former Northville psychiatric hospital?
A recent step brings Northville Township closer to demolition of the former psychiatric hospital on Seven Mile Road and closer to beginning the $82.6 million master plan for its redevelopment. The Northville Township board of trustees approved last week the spending of an additional $288,000 from the township's general fund so the former psychiatric hospital’s powerhouse could be safely demolished. The recreational redevelopment plans for the property include a community center, picnic areas and an energy park with a solar field and wind turbine. However, nothing is final and the plans remain up for discussion. Northville Patch reader John said in his comment on a previous story that a place for outdoor performances should be considered. "…

Northville Township officials are meeting with developers to determine plans for the site of the former Northville Psychiatric Hospital.
Northville Township has still not reached any final agreements on plans for the site of the former Northville Psychiatric Hospital. The Bloomfield Hills-based developer REIS announced a deal with the University of Michigan last year to build a 100,000-square-foot ambulatory center on 82 acres of the property, at the northeast corner along Seven Mile Road. Township officials said the deal with the University of Michigan was good news because it would be an anchor for the property and would stir more development. The township will also be able to benefit from taxing the land. "Our objective is to capture this revenue," said Township Supervisor Bob Nix at a special meeting Thursday evening. However, he said the ambulatory center will not be …

The Northville Township Board of Trustees will talk Thursday about plans for the former Scott prison and Seven Mile psychiatric hospital properties.
The Northville Township Board of Trustees will meet 7 p.m. Thursday at Township Hall to discuss updates on the former Robert Scott Correction Facility and the Seven Mile Property. The prison, on Five Mile and Beck Roads, was shut down in 2009, and the township bought the property from the state for $1 in September. The Township has not yet made a decision on what the 53-acre land will be used for after plans to knock it down this year. Township Supervisor Bob Nix said the property has a wide range of possibilities for use, from a recreational park to retail to a lightweight industrial park. He said that the facility acreage will be a focal point for future activities in that area. "It's going to be the hallmark for the development of …

Township police made nearly 200 arrests for trespassing on the property last year, but now the grounds could be free to use.
Northville Township hopes to address the trespassing issue at the former Northville Psychiatric Hospital property by opening up the grounds for recreational use. Township Manager Chip Snider said he wants to make the Seven Mile Property grounds open to the public for their enjoyment. "I would like to open it up to encourage and inspire - to get people involved, to get enthused about utilizing the land," Snider said. Snider said the township does not have a finalized plan, yet, but several volunteer groups have stepped up and would like to begin creating bicycling, mountain biking and walking paths on the property as soon as this spring—and at no cost to the township. >>Read about the township's $82.6 million park plan for the property …
