While the fundraiser was a success, some parents say they are concerned about the marketing tactics used by Boosterthon to encourage students to raise pledges.
Friday's fun run at Silver Springs Elementary School raised big money—and a little bit of controversy. The event was organized by the school's PTA and Dad's Club in partnership with Boosterthon, a for-profit company that runs similar fundraisers across the country. The fun run was originally scheduled for Feb. 8, but a snow day postponed it until the 15th. Silver Springs' fun run raised more than an estimated $30,000 for the school, which will be used to buy 50 iPads. Principal Melissa Hunt said the run was a great success and supports positive messages at the school, but some parents disagreed with the tactics that were used to have students collect pledges. Marty Testasecca, president of the Silver Springs Dad's Club, said Hunt …

View photos and add your own from the Boosterthon Fun Run at Silver Springs Elementary School in Northville on Friday.
Each grade at Silver Springs Elementary School in Northville participated in a fun run Friday to raise money for the school. The students raised approximately $30,000 in pledges, which will be used to buy 50 iPads. The event was organized by the school's PTA and Dads' Club in partnership with Boosterthon. Each grade ran at a different time throughout the day, and for each lap a student ran, a teacher marked a tally on the back of their t-shirt. Boosterthon then takes down the number of laps to collect the per-lap pledges. Students ran around for 30-45 minutes to loud music, and some laps had a theme such as "skipping" or "dancing." Students also took a victory lap with their parents after they finished. "It was fabulous," said Silver …

Melissa Hunt of Texas was picked for the post.
Out of more than 125 applicants for the principal position at Silver Springs Elementary School, the selection committee narrowed its pick down to one – Melissa Hunt of Texas. Hunt was unanimously confirmed for the post Tuesday night by the Northville school board. She will replace Scott Snyder, who resigned his position last month. "We really see her as someone who has the capacity to take a great school like Silver Springs forward," said Superintendent Mary Kay Gallagher. Hunt, who attended the meeting with her husband, comes from the McKinney Independent School District in Texas where she was an assistant principal. According to her resume, she has experience as a teacher too, having instructed second and third graders. She is a 2002 …

Northville school district hopes to have a candidate to bring before the board by Aug. 28.
At the Northville School board meeting this week, Superintendent Mary Kay Gallagher told the board that more than 80 applications have been received to fill the vacancy left by Silver Springs Elementary School principal Scott Snyder. As of about 4 p.m. on Thursday, that number grew to 100. "The response certainly reflects the District's reputation for excellence in education," district Human Resources director David Rodgers said via email. It was announced earlier this month that Snyder resigned his post as principal. The school board voted 6-1 not to automatically renew Snyder's contract in April. Snyder, school board members and district officials repeatedly declined to comment on the specific reasons the contract was not renewed. Still…

Principal Scott Snyder's contract was not automatically renewed for the 2012-13 school year.
Since the Northville school board's decision in April not to automatically renew the contract of Silver Springs Elementary School principal Scott Snyder, several parents have rallied behind him. At least 20 of those parents filled Northville's school board meeting Tuesday night to ask the board for answers about its decision and for more information about Snyder's future. In previous interviews, the board and principal Snyder have declined to discuss the specifics of what prompted the board's decision to reserve the right to end his contract. A handful of parents spoke in support of Snyder on Tuesday night, all saying that parents were not consulted about the board's decision. Parent Paul Kadesch said, "We have one of the top-performing …

Silver Springs Principal Scott Snyder's contract will not be automatically renewed.
Northville's school board voted last week 6-1 not to automatically renew the contract of Silver Springs Elementary School principal Scott Snyder for the 2012-13 school year. It is unclear what prompted the decision to reconsider the terms of Snyder's contract, which would have otherwise been automatically renewed. The board's decision was reached following a closed session meeting which lasted more than an hour. The reason given was to "consider the dismissal, suspension, or disciplining of, or hear complaints or charges brought against a public officer, employee, staff member or individual when the person requests a closed hearing." The reasons were stated in an April 18 memorandum from Superintendent Mary Kay Gallagher. Gallagher said in…

Students at Silver Springs Elementary School used their passports to experience different cultures on Friday night. The event was part of the school's International Festival. Students were issued passports to stop at various tables, represented by the cultures of students and their families. At each of the booths there were different hands-on activities ranging from a bocce ball game at the Italy table, Mardi Gras mask-making at the Cajun New Orleans table to Argentine soda served at the South American-themed table. About 700 people were in attendance, said event organizer Debbie Eichholtz.
