As part of the "Geek the Library" campaign, funded by a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation grant, Northville's library is promoting its many services to the public. Library director Julie Herrin talks more about some of the library's digital and other services in this week's "Good Morning, Northville" video. DIA Helps Bring Portrait Home to Northville

Since late June, downtown Northville has been graced with replicas of six masterpieces from the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts as part of the popular Inside|Out program. The masterworks, which extend from Poole’s Tavern to the Northville Art House, augment the numerous local public art pieces permanently on display throughout the community. While these works by Frederic Edwin Church, Gari Melcher and other world class artists are exceptional copies from a variety of periods and subjects, Northville’s newest addition from the DIA combines artistry with local lore — an original portrait of William H. Northville District Library to Hold Writing Workshop Saturday

Author Jessica Hatchigan will teach participants about building characters.

Written by Linda Johnson Are you an aspiring novelist? A new workshop may show you how to create memorable characters. Northville author and workshop presenter Jessica Hatchigan says, "Writers can learn how to create characters that capture, entertain and intrigue readers." “Analyze any bestselling novel,” she adds, “and you’ll see that the author uses five specific techniques. Aspiring writers can learn and adopt the same techniques to vastly improve their work.” In her workshop, Hatchigan covers the following: the "do's and don'ts" of building a character; how characterization ties in to plot; a hero’s "must have" characteristics; the importance of your villain, and how to create character arcs.
