On the article Dearborn's Cat Problem

ReplyI don't comment on stories very often, but I have to say, please be patient with people who trap stray cats. I don't live in Dearborn, but I've trapped more cats than I can count, and in four cases, they have become my pets. The others I have found homes for within my circle of family and friends. Sometimes, it has taken a few months to lure a cat, but I always try.
Only in two cases did I have to turn a cat over to shelter.
When someone cares enough to trap the cat, it's a win-win: The neighborhood doesn't have to worry about scads of errant cats, the cat gets a new home a safe life, and the owner gets a new best friend.

I'll make a not of it, Phil. If you have any ideas you can always e-mail Jessica -- she will make the decision regarding out coverage. Thanks for posting, and have a great Veteran's Day.

On the article Dearborn Police, Victim Advocates Reflect on 46 Percent Jump in City's Reported Rapes

Mary Jo - I think I can shed some light on the "forcible" label used by the FBI to track incidents. Law enforcement breaks down sexual assaults in a handful of categories --two of which are forcible and statuatory. "Forcible" is what we generally think of as rape; a person forcing themselves on an unwilling victim. The other category is "statuatory," which is when a legal adult and a person below the age of consent have sex. The FBI Part One report only tracks the former, not the latter. It's not that the latter is not a serious offense -- it is -- but it's not one of the categories tracked in this particular FBI report. Law enforcement officials do understand this.

ReplyI just received an e-mail from Northville Schools Superintendent Mary Kay Gallagher. She pointed out that Jazz Ensemble I and II course will be offered during the same class period to maximize resources, so the number of students is 12 for Jazz I, and 18 for Jazz II.

On the article Moms Talk: How Do You Handle the Death of a Pet?

ReplyI think telling a child that a pet ran away is the wrong strategy. Then the child will alsways wonder where the pet went, and why he left. (Did the pet leave because he didn't like living with me? Did the pet get lost because I didn;t take good enough care of him?).
The best thing to do is explain the loss of the pet like the loss of an adult; that there's a circle of life, all livings leave some time. And, I think it's always good to explain that all dogs and cats go to Heaven.

Scott, your photo caught my eye this morning, and I'm sorry to hear you are going through this.
But I guess I'm also surprised because you are slim. We never hear much about young people (yes, you are still relatively young) coming down with this, and I think people always assume its weight-related. But you are the second person in my social/work strata this week that has said they have diabetes -- and the other one doesn't have a weight problem, either.
Have your doctors been able to tell you how and why this occurred?
