Inge Zayti Wished to Repair American Flag Mural

The Marquis Theatre staff is collecting donations to fulfill Inge Zayti's wish.

Inge Zayti, owner and founder of downtown Northville's Marquis Theatre, was a patriotic woman.

Zayti, who died July 29, was a European immigrant. She purchased the theatre in 1971 with her husband and worked to restore the building's original luster. She commissioned the painting of a giant American flag at the rear of the building about 11 years ago, said Lori Asman, actress and stage manager at the theatre.

The theatre and that image have become iconic landmarks in the city. Above the flag, the mural reads: "America United September 11, 2001."

Zayti was trying to refurbish the mural before she died, Asman said.

The theatre staff wants to see her wish fulfilled. They are accepting donations to repair the mural in lieu of flowers. Those interested in donating can call the theatre at 248-349-8110 or drop off checks at the theatre's office at 135 East Main St.
