Scott Craig Announces His Candidacy for the 20th State House District

Learn more about the Northville school board member.

Scott Craig, trustee on the Northville school board, filed to run for State Representative in the 20th House District next year.  The district includes Plymouth, Northville and part of Canton.

“We need to create a world class education system and build an economy that works for all Michiganders.  This legislature is too interested in promoting their narrow agenda, and not interested in creating a better future for all who make Michigan their home," Craig said in a news release.

Craig is a government and history teacher at Seaholm High School in Birmingham with over 27 years of teaching experience.  He and his wife, University of Michigan Professor Annette Masson, have lived in Northville for 10 years.

Craig believes that the Michigan economy is not working for many in the 20th District due to poor decisions made in Lansing.

"Our unemployment rate of 9 percent places us at #46 in the country.  Our per capita income puts us at #35.  Currently we are spending more on prisons than on higher education.  This is not a path to prosperity," he said in the release.

Craig thinks that the cure for the Michigan economy is creating a highly educated workforce that can attract knowledge based industries. He said the state needs to diversify the economy and promote entrepreneurship, and he will work with anybody to promote economic growth and jobs.

As a school board trustee, Craig has pushed for smaller class size, and as a result, there have been more teachers hired in the last year.  He supported a plan to infuse 21st century technology into the classroom that has resulted in community support for a $21 million bond issue. While he has been on the board, the district fund equity has improved from a low 5 percent to fund equity over 15 percent.
